On Wednesday, January 13, car drivers will be allowed to use Riga public transport free of charge

Having checked the weather forecast for expected snowing, Riga municipality has ruled that on Wednesday, January 13, car drivers will be also allowed to use Riga public transport free of charge. Riga City Council apologizes for having publicised this information with a delay. According to the ruling of the executive director of Riga city, the so called snow-storm tickets were valid on January 11 and 12.

In this case, the registration certificate of a car entitles its holder to using public transport free of charge. The certificate shall be presented during ticket inspection, but shall not be shown to public transport drivers. The right to use public transport free of charge does not apply to minibuses.

This opportunity can be used by any person having reached 18 years; the driver’s licence is not required. The registration certificate will confirm that at the moment the vehicle is not participating in traffic, which is the goal of the municipality. The right to use public transport  free of charge for car drivers is granted by the local government to reduce traffic intensity during  heavy snowfalls and make the work of road maintenance equipment easier.

The so-called snow-storm tickets have been introduced in conformity with binding regulations of Riga City Council, the necessary ruling is issued by the executive director of Riga city, Juris Radzevičs. The municipality granted this right to car drivers for the first time three years ago. Due to mild winters and small amount of snow in last years snow-storm tickets were not necessary.
